Abstract:
In this talk, I will highlight four aspects of Chinese script that may make it unique for models of word reading and ideas for how to help children (and adults) learn to read Chinese better. First, Chinese makes use of both characters and (2 or more character) words in the word recognition process. Second, related to character units, semantic radicals have a unique role to play in early word and character recognition. Third, and correspondingly, morphological aspects of reading are central to the early reading process. Fourth, visual-motor skills appear to play a relatively primarily role in Chinese print mastery. Implications for theory and practice for Chinese literacy will be highlighted.
