  报告题目:How does cortex integrate from local into global along visual hierarchies? 

  报告摘要: 

      Human and nonhuman primates effortlessly see both global and local features of objects in great detail. However, how the cortex integrates local visual cues to form global representations along visual hierarchies remains mysterious, particularly considering a long-standing paradox in vision as neurally encoded complexity increases along the visual hierarchy, the known acuity or resolving power dramatically decreases. Putting it simply, how do we simultaneously recognize the face of our child, while still resolving the individual hairs of her or his eyelashes? Many models of visual processing follow the idea that low-level resolution and position information is discarded to yield high-level representations (including cutting edge deep learning models). These are themes that are fundamental to conceiving how the brain does sensory transformation, and current ideas require hypothetical complicated recurrent loops to connect global and local information across the visual hierarchy. 

      Combining large-scale brain imaging to record the transformation of information across multiple visual areas simultaneously with electrophysiological single-unit recordings(V1, V2, and V4, MT/MST), we demonstrated a bottom-up cascade of cortical visual processingmechanisms underlying integration of local informationto form global representations in the primate ventral and dorsal visual streams.Our local-global stimuli are tyre-type text bars, illusory contours, and the Pinna-Brelstaff concentric rings. Recently, we reveal an unexpected neural clustering preserving visual acuity from V1 into V4, enabling a detailed spatiotemporal separation of local and global features along the object-processing hierarchy, suggesting that higher acuities are retained to later stages where more detailed cognitive behaviour occurs.The study reinforces the point that neurons in V4 (and most likely also in infero-temporal cortex) do not necessarily need to have only low visual acuity, which may begin to resolve the long-standing paradox concerning fine visual discrimination. Thus, our research will prompt further studies to probe how preservation of low-level information is useful for higher-level vision and provide new ideas to inspire the next generation of deep neural network architectures.

     Dr. Wang obtained his MS and PhD degrees at University of Science &Technology of China (USTC) with Professor TiandeShou in Hefei (Anhui Province, China) from 1990 to 1998. After the completion of his PhD study, Dr. Wang worked with Professor Adam Sillito at UCLas a Postdoc Research Fellow from 1998 to 2004. He went to University of Manchester to work with Dr. Niall McLoughlin as a Senior Research Fellow in 2004. Dr. Wang was awarded as the Wellcome Trust career development fellowship in 2006. In 2008, He joined Institute of Neuroscience (ION) with the support of Chinese Academy of Sciences 100 talents Program and established the Laboratory of visual perceptual mechanisms. Dr. Wangs lab brings together a range of multi-disciplinary techniques, working on anesthetized and awake animal preparations including human subjects.   报告题目:All the same, or different, neural and psychological similarities and differences between behavioral and substance addictions 

  报告摘要: 

      Behavioral addiction such as Gambling Disorder, Gaming Disorder or Compulsive Sexual Behaviors had been recently recognized by the World Health Organization and included in the 11th edition of International Classification of Disorders. For the last 6 years, prof. Gola's group was studying mostly problematic pornography consumption which becomes highly prevalent in Europe and USA, where approximately 48% of males and 26% of females aged 18-65 years and 27% of children age 7 to 11 watch it on monthly basis.   

  Clinical observations show that for some individuals binge pornography use (up to 20 hours a day) can be distressing and lead to treatment-seeking for psychiatric care. It raises a question whether pornography can be addictive, and if so then which features does it share with substance and other behavioral addictions?  

  Using a variety of psychological and fMRI methodologies, prof. Gola's group examined similarities and differences between problematic pornography use,  alcohol addiction, and gambling disorder. The group have also conducted clinical trials with psychological pharmaceutical treatment for problematic pornography use with longitudinal fMRI measurements and designed AI-supported methods to predict relapses. Professor Gola will present the results of his studies on problematic pornography use and the preliminary data on the application of developed research and therapeutic paradigms to other addictions such as for example computer gaming.

         Mateusz Gola is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Neuroscience Lab at Institute of Psychology of Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also Associate Research Professor at Institute for Neural Computations at University of California San Diego. He obtained his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience at University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poland and Clinical Psychology Ph.D. at Polish Society for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Prof. Gola conducts research on psychological and neuronal mechanisms of addictions and authored over 50 scientific articles on this topic.

  报告题目:Starting from Scratch: Molecular and Neural Basis of Itch Sensation

      Socially contagious itch is ubiquitous in human society, but itsmolecular and neural basisis unclear. Using animal models, we have identified the molecular and signaling pathway about contagious itch. For example, the gastrin-releasing peptide(GRP)-GRP receptor(GRPR) signaling pathway which is necessary and sufficient for transmitting contagious itch information in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). These findings may have implications for our understanding of neural circuits that control socially contagious behaviors.

           陈宙峰 博士,美国圣路易斯华盛顿大学RussellD. and Mary B. Shelden终身讲座教授,痒觉研究中心主任。陈宙峰教授开创了对痒觉进行分子和神经机制进行研究的新领域,该领域成为近年来国际范围内的研究热点,过去十几年来,他的团队对痒觉脊髓中的传递机制进行了系统深入的研究,研究成果发表在NatureScienceCellPNAS等国际著名学术杂志上。纽约时报、科学美国人和英国BBC都报道过陈宙峰教授的专访。陈宙峰教授的主要学科贡献包括世界上首次发现的痒觉特异性受体和神经元,发现吗啡和止痒的中枢分子机制以及传染性痒的分子和神经机制等。

  报告题目:Bayesian Networks in Educational Assessment 

  报告摘要: 

  The Bayesian paradigm provides a convenient mathematical system for reasoning about evidence. Bayesian networks provide a graphical language for describing complex systems, and reasoning about evidence in complex models. This allows evaluation and assessment designers to build assessments that have fidelity to cognitive theories and yet are mathematically tractable and can be refined with observational data.  

  The term graphical models refers to a probability distribution which is factored according to a graph---nodes of the graph represent variables in the distribution and edges are chosen to represent conditional dependencies among the variables.  Because conditional independence relations can be read from the graph, the graph serves as a guide to efficient computation strategy.  Furthermore, the graph provides an intuitive picture of the statistical model.  As such it provides a mechanism for communication between measurement specialist and domain area experts.  Graphical models, especially the Bayesian networks (graphical models over discrete spaces) have proved very popular in the artificial intelligence community producing applications in: Medical Diagnosis, Military Intelligence, Speech Recognition, and Educational Testing. 

  Topics covered in this workshop are evidence-centered evaluation and assessment design, basic Bayesian network representations and computations, available software for manipulating Bayesian networks, refining Bayesian networks using data, and example systems using Bayesian networks.

      Dr. Duanli Yan is a Director of Data Analysis and Computational Research in the Research & Development division at ETS. She also taught as an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychometrics from Fordham University, dual Maters from Penn State University in Statistics and Operations Research. Dr. Yan was the statistical coordinator for the EXADEP? test, and the TOEIC? Institutional programs, a Development Scientist for innovative research applications and a Psychometrician for several operational programs. She is also a co-author for book Bayesian Networks in Educational Assessment,co-author forComputerized Adaptive and Computerized Adaptive and Multistage Testing with R,  co-editor for volume Computerized Multistage Testing: Theory and Applications, and co-editor for volume Handbook for Automated Scoring: Theory into Practices.  Dr. Yan has offered numerous number of training sessions including annual NCME tutorials based on her books and has given many keynote speeches. She has been an invited symposium and workshop organizer and presenter for many conferences such as American Educational Research Association (AERA) and National Council of Measurement in Education (NCME), International Association for Computerized Adaptive Testing (IACAT), and International Psychometrics Society (IMPS), International Testing Commission (ITC), and International Chinese Statistical Association (ICSA). She is a reviewer for many journals including JEBS. Dr. Yan was the 2011 recipient of the ETS Presidential Award, 2013 NCME Brenda Loyd Outstanding Dissertation Award, 2015 IACAT Early Career Award, 2016 AERA D Significant Contribution to Educational Measurement and Research Methodology Award.

  报告题目:工作记忆训练提高智力和情绪调节能力 

  报告摘要: 

      工作记忆是个体在执行认知任务过程中暂时储存与加工信息的能量有限的系统,被形容为人类的认知中枢。传统观点认为工作记忆容量是固定的,但近来的研究发现,工作记忆可以通过训练得到提高。同时也发现,由于工作记忆与智力之间可能共享脑神经基础,工作记忆训练可能促进智力水平的提高。不仅如此,相关的研究显示,工作记忆与情绪调节也存在密切关系。我们的系列研究工作回答了工作记忆训练能否提高儿童(包括学习障碍儿童)的智力水平;训练效果保持多久;训练方法是否有效;工作记忆能否提升情绪调节能力等问题。 

  报告人简介: 

  南京大学心理系,主任,教授,博士。江苏省哲学与社会科学重点基地(社会与行为科学实验中心)主任;南京大学“登峰人才计划”A学者。曾任北京师范大学心理学院副院长,心理学基础实验教学国家级示范中心主任,应用实验心理北京市重点实验室主任,认知神经科学与学习国家重点实验室教授,东南大学学习科学研究中心兼职教授。主要采用ERPfMRI、眼动记录、多导生理记录、认知行为实验等方法与技术研究:(1)情绪调节的认知与神经机制;(2)工作记忆训练提升智力的起效机制。 

  先后在国内外刊物发表学术论文约220余篇。其中SCISSCI索引论文90余篇。出版著作、译著、教材等著作10多部。获批软件著作权多项。在工作记忆测评与训练、航天员在轨飞行情绪与记忆变化、女性月经周期情绪变化、考试焦虑的诊断与干预、情绪调节的神经生理机制等研究领域取得了系列成果。率先在国内高校心理学本科生中推广、普及心理学实验的计算机化和高端技术手段训练的教学改革,出版了系列心理学实验教学改革教材,推动了心理学实验教学方法的改革。开发的心理学软件产品,在大中小学、医院、监狱等推广使用。先后获得2015年度“第七届高等学校科学研究优秀成果奖(人文社会科学)”三等奖;2017年度高等学校科学研究优秀成果奖(科学技术)一等奖;2017年北京市科学技术奖二等奖。2018年国家科技进步奖二等奖。

      正念是“一种特别的注意的方式:有意图的、此时此刻的、无评判的”。在过去几十年,研究领域对于正念作为一种心理概念与干预有极大的兴趣。对于正念给人们带来的益处,这场报告会回顾研究领域中的关键性进展。报告会讨论正念研究的基石——大脑的可塑性。报告会进一步在三个领域展示正念冥想的益处:对我们大脑的改变、生理与身体功能的改变(包括基因表达),以及心理上的益处。然后,报告会讨论正念引起身心改变的机制,特别是正念冥想是如何改变我们的精神与行为习惯。在回顾正念练习的益处后,报告会转而探讨目前正念研究中的一些关键性问题与批判思索,诸如当下的研究设计与方法问题、研究的严谨性、以及缺乏对其他因素的考虑等问题。

      孙舒放博士是布朗大学医学院临床心理学的博士后。她是一名心理学家、临床工作者、正念老师。她从威斯康星-麦迪逊大学获得咨询心理学博士。她在多所大学教授和研究以正念为基础的干预,包括在威斯康星大学、埃默里大学医学院、布朗大学医学院。在她的临床工作中,她与许多人群进行正念工作,包括大学生、HIV感染者、复健中的病人、以及有精神科疾病的病人。由于优秀的科研工作,孙舒放博士获得了多项研究奖项,包括威斯康星大学罗斯尼研究奖、全球健康协会研究奖、美国国家健康研究院培训奖、心念与生活协会新晋研究者奖项。自2018年,孙舒放博士受聘于布朗大学,并与布朗大学正念中心开展关于如何改变精神与行为习惯的研究。

  报告题目:Sleep optimization strategies 

  报告摘要: 

      Sleep is an enigma; we spend a third of our lives in a state of extended lack of perceptual attention and behavioural reactivity, and we are only beginning to understand the biological functions sleep serves to compensate for these adaptational disadvantages. Despite its important role for health, sleep is often considered a waste of time that could be spent more productively, and average sleep times are decreasing in many countries. In this talk, I will first introduce into the different biological functions of sleep, and will then explore different strategies to optimize sleep. I will in particular focus on polyphasic sleep schedules to reduce total sleep time, the role of sleep for cognitive functioning, and higher cognitive processes during sleep and dreaming.

      Dr. Dresler leads the Donders Sleep & Memory Lab. He was trained in Biopsychology, Philosophy and Mathematics at Ruhr University and received his PhD from the Philipps University of Marburg in Germany; and conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry (Germany), Oxford University (UK) and Stanford University (USA), respectively, before joining the Donders Institute in 2013. He is elected member of the Young Academy of the German National Academy of Sciences. His research is focused on the cognitive neuroscience of sleep, including cognitive processes occurring during sleep and the role of sleep for memory processes, neuroplasticity and general cognitive functioning (https://dreslerlab.org )

    The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is both a target and mediator of the effects of stress on brain function and behavior, but the degree to which stress-related adaptations occur at the level specific BLA output pathways remains unclear.  Here, we report that BLA projection neurons (PNs) quickly recover from acute restraint stress, those PNs that do not target the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) (BLA?dmPFC PNs) become persistently active after exposure to chronic stress. We relate these effects of chronic stress to the loss of small-conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (SKCa) currents in BLA?dmPFCPNs and show that this adaptation correlates with increases in anxiety-like behavior. Using a viral-mediated strategy to maintain SKCa currents, we show that this is sufficient to protect against the physiological and behavioral effects of chronic stress. Finally, we demonstrate that chronic stress produces persistent activation of BLA PN outputs to the ventral hippocampus, identifying this circuit as a major target of the effects of stress. Together, these findings reveal a previously unidentified level of specificity in the effects of stress on BLA output circuits, with implications for understanding the pathophysiological basis of stress-related neuropsychiatric conditions.

      The salience of behaviorally relevant stimuli is dynamic and influenced by internal state and external environment. Monitoring such changes is critical for effective learning and flexible behavior, but the neuronal substrate for tracking the dynamics of stimulus salience is obscure. We found that neurons in the paraventricular thalamus (PVT) are robustly activated by a variety of behaviorally relevant events, including novel (“unfamiliar”) stimuli, reinforcing stimuli and their predicting cues, as well as omission of the expected reward. PVT responses are scaled with stimulus intensity and modulated by changes in homeostatic state or behavioral context. Inhibition of the PVT responses suppresses appetitive or aversive associative learning and reward extinction. Our findings demonstrate that the PVT gates associative learning by providing a dynamic representation of stimulus salience.
